This project aims at experiment a novel method for a low-cost, low-tech and high-resolution (both spatial and temporal) remote sensing methodology for monitoring beach dynamics. It involves the deployment of a Kite Aerial Photography (KAP) using a frameless kite that lifts up to 100 metres above ground a commercial digital reflex operating in the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. The photos acquired in this way were then processed using a new generation of algorithms called SfM (Structure from Motion) that allows the combined use of vertical and non vertical aerial photos to generate accurate DEM and photo-mosaics. We were able to generate a 5 cm resolution photo mosaic and a 10 cm vertical resolution DEM for this particular part of the Dutch coast. This project also acted as a spin-off for another project that we are now developing on the use of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) for landscape change detection and water monitoring.
