on the 22nd of September 2010, at UNESCO-IHE

This year, the University for Peace celebrates its 30th anniversary. In honor of this event a colloquium on ‘The Right to Water and Water Rights in a Changing World’ will be held on the 22nd of September, at UNESCO-IHE.

The topic is very timely: in the face of global changes, what role can law play in safeguarding basic needs and rights, including that of water? Can law be more effectively mobilised to better protect vulnerable communities against droughts, floods and other climate related disasters? In so doing, to what extend can it contribute to world peace?

As laws tend to be rigid, how can they play a more progressive role in a rapidly changing world? Currently water management is stepping away from the idea of stationarity – but what about legal issues? Are they set in stone?

The key-note speakers are Laurence Boisson de Chazournes, from the University of Geneva and Gregory J. Hobbs, from the University of Denver. Prominent scientists knowledgeable on the topic will trigger the debate, lead by Professor András Szöllösi-Nagy, UNESCO-IHE's Rector.

All attendees are invited to join the reception afterwards.
