Mr. Kiwon Jang, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the Republic of Korea to UNESCO in Paris and Mr. Myung Soo Kim, Science Attaché visited Delft on 31 May to discuss cooperation possibilities between the Republic of Korea and UNESCO-IHE.

"I see this cooperation in various aspects," said Jang. "I have a very good impression of UNESCO-IHE and of its education system." The ambassador was intrigued by the variety of theoretical and practical aspects within the curriculum.

In the field

The ideas to expand the Institute's reach by developing a global UNESCO-IHE campus also grabbed his attention. "UNESCO in general should work more closely with the member states and be more present in the field while interacting with people. Doing so with a global network will be more effective and efficient," elaborated the ambassador. "It is now time to see whether these synergies between UNESCO-IHE and the Korean government can be realized and whether existing collaboration efforts can be strengthened."

Four rivers restoration

South Korea is currently running a very large pro-environmental project to restore four major rivers: the Han River (Korea), Nakdong River, Geum River and Yeongsan River. This restoration project will provide water security, flood control and ecosystem vitality. This project was launched in January 2009 and was included later in the South Korean five-year national plan released by the government in July 2009. Its funding, a total of 22.2 trillion won (approximately 11.8 billion Euro), is reflected in the five-year plan’s total investment.

Training need

"To successfully and efficiently run and sustain such a large project, we need a sufficient number of trained professionals," continued Mr. Jang. "This will definitely be addressed within the project. I strongly recommend Korean students and staff in Korean universities to seek postgraduate education in relevant areas at UNESCO-IHE. The expertise, including theoretical and practical knowledge is exceptional at this institute. In addition, the opportunity to exchange experiences and knowledge with people in this global village is unique."
