Learning objectives

After successful completion of this module participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate and present a range of options and alternatives using environmental planning concepts for the prevention or remediation of environmental problems of pollution, deforestation, erosion, loss of wetlands, habitat fragmentation, and climate change.

Syllabus

The concepts and principles of sustainable development will be discussed. Environmental management will be addressed in relation to economic development and poverty alleviation. Also risk assessment and uncertainty analysis will be discussed. A number of policy implementation tools will be introduced such as environmental information management systems, valuation of natural resources and economic policy tools, and environmental impact assessment. Finally, policy enforcement and compliance will be discussed as an essential element in achieving environmental policy goals.

Didactics

Lectures are used to convey the basic subject matter. A group game is used to increase (practical) understanding of sustainable development and common pool resource use. Through an essay assignment, students learn how to develop and present a case in the context of environmental economics. Through a number of group exercises (discussions, poster making) students are brought together to discuss and develop opinions about articles related to the subject matter. An individual assignment is conducted on environmental impact assessment. Through a one-day fieldtrip participants get exposure to the practical perspectives of the subject matter.
