China, Hydrology and Water Resources 1991/1993

My name is Liu Heng. I am the Vice President of the Chinese Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute and Vice Chairperson of Chinese National Committee of UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme, and also a member of the UNESCO-IHE Governing Board.

I studied at the Department of Hydraulic and Hydrological Engineering of IHE in Delft from 1991 until 1993 and as a result my life has totally changed both from a personal point of view and also from a professional point of view.

My knowledge of hydrology and water resources improved thanks to the excellent courses but also thanks to the exchange of experiences between the students.

When I studied in IHE, there were approximately 200 students from all over the world each year. Not only did we benefit from the access to new technologies but we also enjoyed multicultural exchanges by sharing experiences and looking for ways and means to solve our common water problems.

We also had the chance to get to know each other and made friends at the same time learning about our cultural differences.
