Mongolia, Hydroinformatics, 1999/2000

The main goal of Mongolian water management is to improve the management of water and land resources for food, poverty and nature. This can be done through research work and capacity building. This paper describes my experiences as a water resource researcher.

In 1999 and 2000, I studied at IHE and took the Hydroinformatics course. The lectures improved my knowledge on water related education. During my time at IHE I learned many advanced methodologies of hydraulic engineering. The classes on information and communication technologies in monitoring and acquiring data, computer-based modelling, and decision support and knowledge-based systems for integrated water resource management have improved my research skills and the writing of project proposals.

In 2001 I joined the Institute of Geo-ecology. We study water resources of river basins and the ecological situation of Mongolia by implementing fundamental research findings. Our research topics are river water quality, hydrology, benthos, plankton and fish, soil erosion and anthropogenic influence of the gold mining industry on the river water ecology. The objective of this fundamental research study is to determine which water resources can possibly be used in current times and in the ecological situation of the river basins.

The topic of my research is the analysis of anthropogenic activities and water consumption in river basins. The final results of the research study and a database can help decision makers plan water management.
