This short course includes lectures and number of case studies. The programme also entails a one-day fieldtrip to selected industry where best management practice in pollution prevention, wastewater and sludge treatment can be seen.

Learning objectives

The objective of the short course is to enable participants to:

  • understand principles of pollution prevention and control including 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle);
  • get insight in waste(water) generation within number of selected industries;
  • acquire basic knowledge on industrial wastewater characterization (flow and load estimation);
  • understand principles of various processes applicable to industrial wastewater treatment;
  • identify and select the best applicable technology for the treatment of particular industry;
  • understand role of industrial pre-treatment in the urban water cycle;
  • characterize in both quantitative and qualitative way the waste sludge generated by domestic and industrial wastewater treatment;
  • appreciate different options for sludge treatment, disposal and reuse;
  • understand and calculate mass balances taking place in the process of sludge generation and its treatment;
  • identify the best applicable technologies for wastewater treatment from the perspective of sludge yield (production);
  • acquire basic understanding of interactions (common treatment) between domestic sludge, septic sludge, faecal sludge;
  • realize energy potential of sludge treatment/reuse;
  • acquire good idea on how industrial wastewater treatment and residuals management work in practice.
Target group

Mid-career professionals dealing with the technical,environmental and management aspects pertaining to industrial pollution control, wastewater treatment, residuals/waste minimization, disposal and reuse etc.
