On the 28th of October 2009, Mr. Richard Buamah from Ghana successfully presented and defended his PhD thesis and was awarded his Doctoral degree. Professor Jan Schippers was his promoter and Branislav Petrusevski was his co-promoter. The PhD research focused on ‘Adsorptive removal of manganese, arsenic and iron from groundwater’.
Arsenic, manganese and iron in drinking water at concentrations exceeding recommended guideline values pose health risks and aesthetic defects. In the research, groundwater from Ghana has been screened for the occurrence of Arsenic, manganese and iron.
Batch and pilot experiments on manganese adsorption equilibrium and kinetics using iron-oxide coated sand (IOCS), Aquamandix and other media have been investigated under different process conditions and the data modeled.
The formation of catalytic manganese oxide coating on sand; the effect of manganese and iron loading on manganese removal, release and rate of oxidation of adsorbed iron and manganese have also been studied.
