Dr. Jan Willem Foppen talks about the UNESCO-IHE PhD seminar Optimizing Water Use with a focus on Developing Countries and the Sense Introductory Course.

From 26 to 30 September 2011, UNESCO-IHE will hold its annual PhD Seminar. At the seminar, current PhD fellows will present the latest results of their work.

The event aims at getting together PhD research students in a three-day event. It provides a setting for PhD fellows to present their research to their peers and obtain their feedback, and creates an opportunity for interaction, networking, sharing of information and ideas, and collaboration.

The full programme and selected abstracts can be downloaded here. This year the PhD Seminar will comprise a Studium Generale, and two days of presentations, plenary sessions and panel discussions. This will be followed by a SENSE A1 course, which will also be attended by PhD students from other institutes and universities within the SENSE consortium. A few highlights of the programme include:

  • Three of UNESCO-IHE's research leaders will present a comprehensive overview of their research activities within the theme 'Optimizing Water Use with a Focus on Developing Countries' during the Studium Generale.
  • In nine sessions in two days, around 50 PhD students will present their research.
  • Mark van Loosdrecht from the Delft University of Technology will present the workshop 'How to write a world class paper?'
  • The SENSE A1 Course on 'Environmental research in context' will be attended by more than 60 PhD students.
